Burns Night is one of the most iconic celebrations in the Scottish calendar, bringing together poetry, heritage, food, and of course, great whisky. Held every year on 25th January, it honours Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns, and has become a global celebration of Scottish culture.

At Barrel & Bond Whisky Tasting, Burns Night is one of our favourite evenings of the year – the perfect excuse to gather friends, raise a dram, and celebrate tradition.

Burns Night commemorates the life and works of Robert Burns, one of Scotland’s most famous poets. The evening typically follows a traditional format known as a Burns Supper, featuring poetry readings, a formal meal, and plenty of toasts.

Whether celebrated in a grand hall, a cosy pub, or at home with friends, Burns Night is all about storytelling, music, laughter, and honouring Scottish heritage.

Who Was Robert Burns?

Robert Burns was born in 1759 in Ayrshire and is widely regarded as Scotland’s national bard. His poems and songs, including Auld Lang Syne, Tam o’ Shanter, and To a Mouse, are still loved today.

Burns wrote about love, nature, politics, and everyday life, often in Scots dialect, making his work both powerful and relatable. His legacy lives on through Burns Night celebrations across the world.

Traditional Burns Night Food & Drinks

A classic Burns Supper centres around haggis, neeps and tatties (turnips and potatoes). The haggis is traditionally piped in before being ceremonially addressed with Burns’ famous poem Address to a Haggis.

Other traditional dishes include:

• Scotch broth

• Cullen skink

• Cranachan for dessert

And of course, no Burns Night would be complete without Scotch whisky flowing throughout the evening.

Whisky and Burns Night – A Perfect Pairing

Whisky plays a starring role on Burns Night, from the welcome dram to the final toast. Each stage of the evening can be paired with a different style of whisky – smoky, sweet, spicy or smooth – depending on the mood and menu.

At Barrel & Bond, we host bespoke Burns Night whisky tastings for restaurants, corporate events, and private celebrations. We guide guests through carefully selected drams while sharing stories behind each whisky and its distillery.

Whisky & Food Pairings for Burns Night

Pairing whisky with food elevates the entire Burns Supper experience. Here are some perfect combinations:

Haggis

Recommended whisky: Lagavulin 16

A bold, peaty Islay whisky with smoky, medicinal notes that cut through the rich, spicy flavours of haggis beautifully.

Neeps & Tatties

Recommended whisky: Glenmorangie Original 10 Year Old

Smooth, honeyed and citrus-led, this Highland whisky complements the earthy sweetness of neeps and creamy potatoes perfectly.

Smoked Salmon Starter

Recommended whisky: Highland Park 12 Year Old

Light smoke, gentle spice and subtle sweetness pair wonderfully with oily, smoky salmon.

Cranachan Dessert

Recommended whisky: GlenDronach 12 Year Old

A sherry-cask matured whisky packed with rich notes of dried fruit, chocolate and spice – ideal with creamy, sweet desserts.

These pairings create balance, enhance flavours, and make the evening truly memorable.

Final Toast

Burns Night is more than a dinner – it’s a celebration of culture, community, and connection. Whether you’re hosting at home or attending an event, raising a glass to Robert Burns is a moment to pause, reflect, and enjoy great company.
